A Chance to Learn

A Chance to Learn is dedicated to finding and providing solutions to enhance families through women empowerment and quality education for children.

Founded in 2011 to combat the issue of children entering kindergarten deficient in their academic skill set. At their inception they focused on building skills that were important for children 0 to 5 years old. Their comprehensive programs like the SMARTkid Camp promote high-quality school readiness, thus increasing all children’s chances of achieving future educational success and becoming productive members of society.

In 2016, due to the overwhelming need for parent engagement programs, A Chance to Learn launched its “Motivated Mom” and “A Parent’s Promise” platform to help moms become more engaged in their child (ren)’s education.
The Motivated Mom programs help moms live a life of purpose, fully engaged and financially free.

Aberg Center for Literacy

Aberg Center for Literacy is building richer lives, stronger families, and better communities through programs in English fluency, preparation for high school equivalency in English and Spanish, early childhood education, and family literacy. Due to COVID-19, we had to stop delivering services in person and were forced to cancel our spring fundraiser that we anticipated would yield over $60,000 net in critical operating funds for the agency. Following spring break our staff called all students to ask a series of questions, provide information and link them to resources to help them navigate the frightening landscape. As of March 26, 50% of our students’ households experienced loss of income, 59% did not understand the “shelter in-place order’, and 32% did not know what to do if someone gets sick. We also assessed their needs and capability for distance learning, and 92% expressed interest in online learning. This affirms that our services are needed now more than ever to increase understanding of the current crisis and help our students continue to strengthen their skills to provide economic sustainability. Staff assessed options for platforms and content and devised a plan to shift classes for both adult and children to an online platform. While we will not be offering as many class hours as we do with in-person operations, we are trying to provide an offering that is impactful and acknowledges the high levels of stress that our students are currently experiencing. Our goal is to provide a space for students to continue learning and stay connected. We will continue to provide resources for emergency needs and a safe space for emotional support. In addition to devoting class time to assist with resources, we will continue to use our social media channels and WhatsApp groups to educate our students and the public and to keep students informed about community resources. We need funding to pay for the online platform and for staff to continue serving our students as we journey together through this crisis.

Abide Women’s Health Services

If you our someone you know is in need of women’s health material resources such as diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, breastfeeding equipment, baby clothing, etc please contact us at info@abidewomen.org or call 972-474-6311 to schedule an appointment for pick-up or delivery. A limited supply of cloth medical masks are available to birth workers such as midwives and doulas who are providing essential care during this crisis. Abide offers free virtual Baby cafe every Tuesday from 10am-12pm for breastfeeding support. We prioritize black women, South Dallas residents, and birth workers such as midwives and doulas but do not have zip code restrictions. Abide is also accepting donations of all of the above listed material items if you have extra or you may order from our wish list online.

Harris Youth Center, a first-of-its-kind center offering support services to homeless youth ages 14-21. The center includes an after-hours drop-in center as well as a residential center in South Dallas. The drop-in center offers youth a space to find refuge, a place to study, eat, shower, and access other immediate support services. The residential services component includes sleeping rooms for unsheltered high school students in Dallas ISD.

On July 1 the merger between the Aberg Center for Literacy and Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT) was completed. The new merged organization provides cradle to career learning programs for students of all ages – from early childhood to adults pursuing careers.

At Aspire, we believe learning turns obstacles into opportunities. Every day, we walk alongside our students as they make the brave decision to change their lives. From learning English or earning a GED, to balancing a family bank account or preparing for careers, our students face challenges with confidence. Association of Persons Affected by Addiction

APAA – Association of Persons Affected by Addiction is a Recovery Community Organization that provides addiction and mental health recovery support services for individuals, family and community. APAA have a staff of 25 recovery coaches that work throughout the community and initiated the Dr. Louis E. Deere Behavioral Health Complex with the “Living Room” (jail and hospital crisis diversion) on Al Lipscomb Way. APAA has a Recovery Community Center at 3116 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in South Dallas. APAA has been in existence for 22 years.

Beacon Hill Preparatory Institute

What is our community’s greatest asset? Your answer may be – like ours – our children. Americans have always valued education. We believe education is a cornerstone of individual and community success. We know it’s essential to getting a job with a good wage and health benefits. And we know an educated workforce is fundamental to a community’s economic prosperity. We believe that by transforming education, we can change lives, provide families hope for the future, and break the cycle of poverty.

And yet… only 36% of Dallas County 3rd graders read on grade level. Reading at grade level for 8th graders is no better: still 36%. In math, only 36% of 3rd graders tested at grade level and this drops to 31% by 8th grade. This presents long term economic and social challenges for our community. At Beacon Hill, our response and our motto is Success Begins with Preparation. We supplement school systems and prepare students and families for success by providing reading and math tutoring, parent education, college preparation, and enrichment activities for low-income African American and Hispanic students in South Dallas and surrounding communities. In 2019-20 we:
· tutored 985 students (69% African American, 25% Hispanic, 95% low-income) in after-school, in-school, and summer programs at 22 public schools, charter schools, and community locations, and

· 94% of our students maintained or improved their reading and/or math grade level.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas’ mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Braswell Child Development Center

Braswell Child Development Center is on a mission to increase the value of early childhood education by providing an environment that enhances each child’s interest to learn and ability to become an independent thinker through developmentally appropriate activities. Braswell offers childcare, pre-school and before and after school care for students through the 5th grade attending neighborhood schools.Founded in 1994, Braswell meets the need for safe, affordable, yet educationally-based, quality child care for low-income families in South Dallas. Braswell Child Development Center (Braswell) is in the Frazier neighborhood adjacent to Fair Park. 50 percent of residents live in poverty, and 51 percent are unemployed (frazierdallas.org).Programs nurture each child as an individual, helping them reach their greatest potential through fun, age-appropriate learning activities, teacher guided interactions and a quality curriculum. 95 percent of children that have attended Braswell for more than 12 months are on target for age appropriate learning activities and are ranked Kindergarten ready.Children who develop a love of learning and a strong foundation of academic, social and emotional skills are more likely to succeed in school and in life. The preschool classrooms at Braswell are designed to help each child explore math, science, creative expression and reading to prepare them for kindergarten. Without access to quality preschools, children are far less likely to be prepared to start kindergarten than their peers. In fact, racial and socioeconomic disparities in access to high-quality early education contribute to achievement gaps that are noticeable by the time children enter kindergarten.Braswell offers nationally accredited, quality learning programs that help children reach important development milestones. One hundred percent of staff are residents of South Dallas and sixty-five percent of them possess their early child certification through a partnership with Education al First Steps. The average tenure of our employees is 16 years.

Bridges Safehouse, Inc.

BRIDGES is reducing the barriers for families to increase their ability to get into long term, stable housing. We help to create a sustainable bridge out of poverty by providing emergency shelter for pregnant women and women mothering small children. Bridges also hosts a Community Diaper Pantry which provides emergency assistance of diapers, wipes, clothing and health products. We are building relationships with mothers in order to keep families in their homes and hopefully prevent a crisis that could lead to homelessness.

Carter’s House

Hunger
The CitySquare Food Pantry, food recovery program and youth mobile meal programs for after school and summer remove barriers to accessing healthy food.

Health
CitySquare health and wellness programs work in both a clinic setting and in our community and continuum of programs. We help our neighbors access primary care providers or additional resources to improve their health.

Housing
CitySquare is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing in the City of Dallas with permanent supportive housing, transitional housing and rapid rehousing units.

Hope
From workforce development, legal representation and services for youth aging out of foster care, we are focused on building hope in our community.

Empowering the Masses is a nonprofit organization formed for the purpose of empowering underserved individuals. By providing life skills and educational training services. This will help each individual achieve long term financial independence and self-sufficiency in order to become productive in their families and community.

Fannie C. Harris Youth Center & After8toEducate

As part of the After8toEducate collaborative, Promise House is expanding our residential services to a second location by transforming the Fannie C. Harris Elementary School building into the new Fannie C. Harris Youth Center to combat youth homelessness amongst students within DISD high schools. The After8 initiative uses a collective impact approach to bring together a cross-sector group of public-private partners towards the same goal of promoting self-sufficiency and stable housing among unsheltered high school youth ages 14-21. After8 is the city’s first collective approach to provide a single solution for homeless youth and could be a possible model approach to be replicated in other jurisdictions. Partners in the collaborative include: DISD, who provided and will maintain the facility, CitySquare, who will operate the drop-in center, Social Venture Partners Dallas who is assisting with management.Promise House will manage, staff, and operate all residential services. This will almost double our Emergency Youth Shelter, adding 26 beds, and increase our Transitional Living Program capacity by 9 beds. Like current Promise House residential services clients, these youth will receive not only basics like food and shelter, but also access to medical, dental, and mental health services; counseling and therapy; and tutoring and other educational resources.

FEED Oak Cliff

FEED Oak Cliff is a 501c3 organization comprised of dedicated volunteers working collaboratively to significantly impact or end the food deserts plaguing southern Dallas. Our goal is to ensure that all communities have access to quality, fresh and affordable food choices in their neighborhoods by recruiting, developing or building healthy community-based grocery markets or access points. Toward this end, we engage in on-going advocacy and community education.We provide education and awareness via our annual events, the Men’s Health Conference and the Dallas VegFest. The Men’s Health Conference provides educational offerings presented by experts on physical, mental and financial health to address issues often identified as stressors for men, and especially for men of color.The Dallas VegFest is our annual FREE festival celebrating nutrition, health and environment. This large community-based event features noted experts speaking on ways to improve health and lifestyle; enjoyable cooking demonstrations; a variety of fun fitness classes; children’s activities and a vast selection of vendors presenting an array of helpful wares. This event has grown to attract vendors and visitors from all over Texas and other states, in addition to serving the vast southern Dallas populous.

First Choice Social Services

First Choice Social Services’ mission is To be the First Choice in social services to provide treatment for families affected by domestic violence, substance abuse, and teen homelessness. First Choice Social Services provides the following services: – Counseling – Psychosocial educational groups – Battering Intervention and Prevention Program – Information and Referral – Victim referral services – Case Management – Anger Management – Liaison between client & referral source – Life Skills – Parenting Skills – First Responder Support Services – Drug and Alcohol Assessments – Drug Education Offender Program – Marijuana Intervention and Prevention Program – Theft Intervention and Prevention Program

Focus on Teens

With the closure of schools in Dallas and Fort Worth ISDs, many homeless adolescents have limited access to basic needs items, such as food and hygiene products, that they depend on during the school year. Focus on Teens (FOT) typically serves 280 homeless students each week during the school year through Drop-in Centers and Supply Closets that are managed through FOT but hosted by individual schools. Right now, students served by FOT have limited access to the food and basic needs items they typically receive through FOT services, as all Dallas and Fort Worth ISD campuses are currently locked. FOT anticipates a significant need for these items when students are allowed to have access to their school campuses (likely in May or June 2020) and is stocking these items in preparation of this need. FOT believes that the demand for food and basic needs items will be significantly higher than usual during the summer of 2020 because the population of families who have lost permanent shelter as a result of the economic crisis will have increased significantly. Typically, FOT serves approximately 50 students each week throughout the summer, but is planning to serve a minimum of 100-150 students this summer.

Frazier Revitalization

Frazier Revitalization is a place based organization serving the Frazier neighborhood in the South Dallas Fair Park area. Our mission is to be a catalyst for the transformation of the Frazier neighborhood by coordinating, supporting and assisting in economic and cultural development. We are community builders, we work with anchor institutions in the area to address the social determinants of health, we work toward fit and affordable housing, reducing barriers to education and jobs, increased access to quality food and access to quality medical care. In an area like Frazier, information travels slowly, and coupled with an overall lack of trust by the residents, it is imperative that we provide one on one contact with residents to help guide them to resources that are available. COVID-19 is another obstacle that the residents must navigate, another struggle that will tamp them down, and another indicator of the north/south divide that exists in the City of Dallas.During this time, we are present to the residents in the form of phone calling, texting, emailing, and often direct contact, trying to make sure our families are equipped with:1. ilooklikeLOVE is a South Dallas-based 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit positively impacting generations through diaper assistance and parental empowerment. Through our monthly, community-wide “Diaper Day” events and Emergency Diaper Assistance for crisis cases, the overlooked essential of diapers is more accessible to families who need them. We also provide coaching, instruction, tools and resources that shift young families towards a brighter future by encouraging the on-going well-being of the child, personal well being of the mother, and the financial well-being of the household through our EmpowerU Program for single mothers.

Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas

With all the closures in Dallas and across the US, those who live paycheck-to-paycheck have even greater anxiety about what the next few months look like as a result of COVID-19. Many who work in the hardest hit industries will no longer have the funds to pay for their rent, utilities, food, medication, mental health care and other basic needs items. That’s where we come in. With your help, Jewish Family Service (JFS) can “keep the lights on’ for those who need it most. For 70 years, JFS’s role, during and after a crisis, is to assist those who are impacted now and as they recover from their losses, whatever they may be. JFS is here to help our community and those most vulnerable to navigate the journey to stabilization and recovery. LAJC Laptop Borrowing Program and LAJC Tutoring Services

We are a community based, educational support organization providing computer resources and tutoring services to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We recently issued laptops to students in DFW who did not have them to do their school work. We are in need of funding to continue tutoring and providing resources. , We are currently providing these resources through donations only.

Metrocare

Metrocare is the largest provider of mental health services in North Texas, serving nearly 60,000 adults and children annually. For over 50 years, Metrocare has provided a broad array of services to people with mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. In addition to behavioral health care, Metrocare provides primary care centers for adults and children, services for veterans and their families, accessible pharmacies, housing and supportive social services. Alongside the clinical care, researchers and teachers from Metrocare’s Altshuler Center for Education & Research are advancing mental health beyond Dallas County while providing critical workforce to the state.

Mommies In Need

Mommies In Need is currently piloting a virtual program that will help alleviate the burden of childcare on families where a parent is ill disabled or in the hospital. We offer this to families who are suffering from any type of health crisis with a particular focus on those affected by COVID-19. This program will focus serving pre-school children (ages 3-6) and will have several different services available including: An emailed daily schedule for the kids with curated content for the age group in an easy to access format. Because one or both of the parents may be extremely ill our Curriculum Specialist is taking all the research and guesswork out of keeping kids entertained and educated, One-on-one time with a “Virtual Nanny’ through a video conference system, Access to technology for families who do not already have it available in their homes Weekly delivery of all supplies needed for activities and curriculum’. We are also actively working with community partners to see what other resources we can help deliver to families who are severely affected by this public health crisis such as diapers and healthy snacks.

PathWay to Purpose for Youth

PathWay to Purpose for Youth provides a tangible measure of hope and resources, and offers young people what they need and want most: adults who respect and listen to them; a safe environment where they can learn while having fun and being themselves; and interesting, constructive servant-leadership and educational activities. PathWay to Purpose for Youth’s Cynthia Mickens Ministries’ Free Summer Learning and Feeding Program provides youth of these underserved communities with two hot meals and a snack daily which reduces food insecurity and creates a more stable family life. In addition, through our entrepreneurship / small business initiative will are addressing the prevalence of poverty by creating financial stability. Our STEM program will include coding and website development along with opportunities to create a business. Those who excel in the STEM sessions of the program will be invited to join a post-program that will cover topics such as, budgeting, how to start a business and how to get a loan for your new business.

Refugee Services of Texas, Dallas

Refugee Services of Texas, Dallas: RST Dallas is in need of volunteers who purchase most needed items for families and drop off at families apartment doors or the office building in the Vickery Meadow area – no interaction with families required. Southern Dallas Link is connecting job seekers of the Southern Sector with reliable transportation to Livable wage jobs not on the DART transportation system. Because many of your greater paying jobs are in areas lacking public transportation service, we are shuttling from the various DART train stations to the various suburban areas throughout the DFW Metroplex where the jobs are located. So now if a job seeker identifies a good paying job in Grapevine we can connect them with the job with our reliable transportation. We are alo transporting Seniors to their Medical appointments as well as grocery store an pharmacy appointments.

Springs Fellowship Church / Touch Ministry Faith Health

Touch Ministry Faith Health is a ministry within Springs Fellowship Church.
This ministry promotes Health & Wellness within a community with very high health disparities and food deserts, as faith community caregivers we assess the need of a client and provide community resource information and support when needed, this team has received training from Texas Health Resources, Baylor Scott & White, and Parkland Hospital as Faith Community Caregivers.
Texas Health Resources, Baylor Scott & White, and Parkland Hospital provide free community health screenings and education events on our campus with the help of our ministry, this ministry also provides free blood pressure and diabetes checks.
THR has two Well Together Programs, one provides free mental health counseling with The Center for Integrative Counseling & Psychology, and the other is a Mental Health First Aid Training under The University of North Texas at Dallas. As the resource navigator and connector I assess the client’s needs and make referrals, and assist with setting up training classes.

The Oak Cliff Veggie Project

We are a collective 501(C)3 organization serving the southern Dallas sector. Our three points of service include: Education, Cultivation and Preparation. Our project goal is to cultivate a stronger, healthier and more self reliant community.Our mission to affect a positive impact on the health and agricultural landscape of historically under-served communities of Dallas, TX. Our core programs include:1. The Veggie Store Initiative – A donation based monthly produce distribution. The initiative provides fresh produce to neighborhoods classified as food desserts. Included with the produce is information detailing other food insecurity resources across Dallas and recipes for healthy plant based meals. The produce for this initiative is sources from our network of community gardens, an online food coop(Bountiful Baskets) and a cross-section of local Dallas farms.2. Cultivate The Community Initiative – A community garden/micro-farm building program. This initiative helps other community organization build and maintain community gardens/micro-farms.3. School Gardens Initiative – A joint program in partnership with GROW North Texas to bring community gardens, including curriculum, to elementary school in specific zip codes.4. Garden Warrior Initiative – A experiential exploratory program working with summer camps and other youth care facilities to introduce children to the basics of agriculture including urban farming and hydroponics. Our network of community gardens will be used to facilitate learning these lessons. 5. Beginning Urban Farmers Initiative – A joint program with GROW North Texas and El Centro Urban Agriculture promoting the participation of young people in a mentor program to train them in ways of building an urban farm business. This training will cover the business planning knowledge necessary to start and operate an urban farm. 6. Kitchen Warrior Initiative – A experiential exploratory program working with local culinary professional to educate families in the means to efficiently prepare healthy plant based meals for themselves.

TR Hoover CDC

T.R. Hoover’s mission is to strengthen, empower, and provide holistic, collaborative services that impact the South Dallas community through affordable housing, economic, and community development. We advocate and address the issues of poverty, economic divestment, blight, infrastructure decline, neighborhood safety, and the rising levels of unemployment.

In the late 80s, we began as a grassroots neighborhood association that later became recognized as the Ideal Neighborhood Association, composed of low income families seeking to reverse the negative trends developing within their community. In 1997, a small group from the association went on to form T. R. Hoover Community Development Corporation (TRHCDC), and received its 501(c)(3) and began identifying and addressing the issues of economic divestment, blight, infrastructure decline, neighbourhood safety and the rising levels of unemployment within the South Dallas Community.

TRHCDC began work with its residents to help shape the life of its community. Through hard work and great support from its residents, the results led to the construction of the TRHCDC Multipurpose Center, the building of 55 new single infill homes. Currently, TR Hoover CDC serves children, adults, and seniors in the South Dallas area through programs like after school and summer care, seniors helping seniors, referral services for those in need of housing and food, licensed counseling, donation giveaway tables, ESL training, and seasonal programs.

Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach

Women Called Moses is an underground railroad for survivors of domestic violence. We seek to prevent and end the cycles of domestic violence through education, research, resources, and advocacy programs which are provided to individuals, families, communities, corporations, and coalition non-profit agencies throughout the United States.We provide an emergency safe haven for survivors and their children fleeing abusive environments. The guiding principle of Women Called Moses is “Safety First!’ Survivors are given the assistance they need to be safe and the guidance to rebuild their lives.

YMCA

As of 3/19: YMCAs have been approved to provide emergency child care. Offering limited childcare programming on a daily basis, supporting the childcare needs of our first responders, medical professionals, government officials, and those that must continue their work in this challenging time.This care will be offered until further notice, at 11 YMCA branches across the Dallas Metroplex, in accordance to state guidelines.

Youth Revive

Youth Revive provides character and civic education in South Dallas/Fair Park area high schools to help close the civic empowerment gap for youth in low-income communities. Youth Revive facilitators lead students through project-based Ignite Me Action Civics curriculum. This happens during the traditional school day directly in the classroom. Our curriculum uses a six-phase framework process: analyze community assets and issues, identify key issues through root-cause analysis, research for evidence, propose solutions, develop an action plan, and present their projects at the program’s capstone event, Community Action Project (C.A.P.) Day.

We have served over 600 students since the start of our program and in that time, our community action student groups have presented 84 projects with proposed solutions to issues ranging from police brutality to inadequate emergency services. Collaborating with community organizations is key to our program. We work to connect students with agencies that have a missional cause around their identified issue. We invite local officials and community leaders to C.A.P. Day so they can interact with students on their community action projects. We also have a Know Your Assets Week, where we host 15 to 25 local organizations and pair them with a student group interested in their mission space for discussion and learning. These connections provide helpful insight, means of relevant research, assistance in creating an effective solution for the identified issue, and in some cases, internship opportunities. We partner with the City of Dallas in the fall and spring to host Operation Beautification, a community service event for the students in our program.

During the 2019-2020 school year, 271 students participated through our five early college high school partners. 79% of students demonstrated increased levels of agreement that they know the four categories of a Community Asset Map. 60% of students demonstrated increased levels of agreement that they plan to work with a group to solve issues in their community. 75% of students demonstrated increased levels of agreement that they can identify assets in their community who would be willing to help find a solution to an issue. Over 70 students presented at the fall 2019 C.A.P. Day, where we had 50 judges interact with students on their projects and 30 volunteers help execute a success event.

Zan Wesley Holmes Community Outreach Center is a nonprofit organization creating self-sustaining pathways out of poverty for young people and families in Dallas, Texas, through education and job placement. We create self-sustaining pathways out of poverty through training and placement of individuals within the electrical industry. Zan Wesley Holmes Community Outreach Center is a nonprofit organization creating self-sustaining pathways out of poverty for young people and families in Dallas, Texas, through education and job placement.
